Нов elected president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, declined the invitation from the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to visit the European country and closely observe the effects of the Russian invasion. Sheinbaum, who will take office on October 1, explained at a press conference that the Mexican Constitution clearly establishes a foreign policy based on non-intervention in external affairs and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
In response to a direct question from a journalist, Sheinbaum said: "I don't think (I will go to Ukraine). We, I repeat, (are based on) foreign policy, constitutional principles". Her comments come after Zelensky expressed in an interview with a Mexican newspaper his hope that the current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, would visit Ukraine instead of inviting Russian military personnel to the Independence Day parade of Mexico.
The Ukrainian president also sent a message to Sheinbaum, indicating: "We respect your country and hope that Mexico, at an official level, will come to visit us, and Ukraine, of course, will send a high official for the inauguration of the president".
Sheinbaum emphasized that the Constitution is clear and pacifist, and that her approach will be to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts while maintaining relations with countries that do not pose a threat to Mexico. It has not been disclosed whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend Sheinbaum's inauguration.
The future president of Mexico pointed out that she will follow a similar stance to López Obrador, who during his term traveled abroad few times, prioritizing national governance. Sheinbaum expressed that her main responsibility is to lead Mexico, although she will attend internationally significant events, avoiding frequent trips abroad.
